A NEW TRANSPORT PLAN FOR HAMPSHIRE

At the Active Places Summit in October Hampshire County Council (HCC) showcased how to make cycle possible, whatever your age or ability, type of cycle or purpose of journey. Watch the summit here

Now is the opportunity to ask HCC to put these ideas into practice as they are consulting on a new Transport Plan. The Plan is a commitment by the county on how they will spend the transport budget together with revised policies, strategies and vision. We need to make sure that there is a real commitment for cycling, not just the odd bit of pavement where cycling is allowed.

It is seven years since the plan was updated and a lot has changed since then. Cycling is now seen as a major transport mode, it benefits us in so many ways - health, clean air, efficient form of transport (when there are viable routes), space efficient, inexpensive to use and to build for...... Cycling can only be possible if places are designed for cycling, and if there is a demand for this. So please answer the consultation and give your support for

  1. more and better cycle networks

  2. cycle networks designed in accordance with the best principles

  3. cycling planned for and usable, useful routes built before houses are built

One outcome for the Transport Plan is carbon neutral by 2050 so we welcome

Guiding principle 1 – Significantly reduce dependency on the private car and reduce the overall need to travel There is no plausible path to carbon neutrality without major transport emissions reductions. We will need to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport, own fewer cars, and use them less - to decarbonise and make more efficient use of our transport system.

Cycle Basingstoke welcomes this major change in policy, it is the only way that cycling can become a viable and attractive way to travel. It will safeguard the future for our children and grandchildren.
